OC Moves to State's COVID-19 Purple Tier - NMUSD Schools Will Remain Open

Orange County and 27 other counties were suddenly moved back to the most restrictive purple tier of California’s color-coded COVID-19 tracking system. State guidelines note that if a county falls back into the “purple tier”, schools that have already resumed in-person instruction prior to today are not required to close.

Since all Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) schools have reopened for hybrid in-person instruction, our schools will remain open. Per current state guidelines, a school or District-wide closure will be based on circumstances of individual school and District-wide COVID-19 cases, and is not tied to the State’s 4-Tier system once schools have opened for in-person instruction.

As a reminder, our District consults with the Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA) to determine the extent of staff/student COVID-19 cases and possible school closures. For more information on the criteria for school closures please see the NMUSDSchool Reopening Plan (page 19).
