Newport-Mesa Announces Cloud Campus Principal

Dr. Racquel Stephens was selected as principal of Cloud Campus, Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s 100% (K-12) virtual school. Dr. Stephens is an experienced educator, starting her career as a third grade teacher, serving as a mathematics teacher and most recently as district K-12 Coordinator of Online Learning for Irvine Unified School District’s (IUSD).

As a coordinator, Dr. Stephens was the curriculum leader for secondary content areas for IUSD Virtual Academy that served more than 13,000 elementary and secondary students and 500 teachers. Her responsibilities included collaborative online course development; staff hiring, mentorship and evaluations; contributing to master schedule planning and enrollment; parent, student, staff, and community communication. She also worked closely with the educational technology team to provide staff development, implement innovative digital curriculum design, and establish best practices in educational technology.

Dr. Stephens possesses a vast range of experience in education, serving in a variety of roles from elementary, high school and higher education settings. She has served as lead math teacher, department chair and instructional coach, lead teacher of online course development, virtual teacher, and was the owner and operator of a summer academic enrichment program serving multiple communities in Southern California.

“Her wealth of knowledge, varied experience and leadership in virtual instruction make Dr. Stephens’ a perfect fit to lead our virtual school, Cloud Campus,” said Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education Ms. Kerrie Torres. 

Dr. Stephens is known as an enthusiastic leader, collaboratively supporting new and veteran teachers to create an optimal online environment for students. She also is known for analyzing complex issues within an organization, both from a structural and a cultural perspective, to provide vision and programs for continuously improving student learning and teacher support. 

Dr. Stephens obtained her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from California State University, Fullerton; her Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from California State Polytechnic, Pomona; and has obtained multiple credentials.

Dr. Stephens will begin her new role on August 9, 2021.
