Facility Project Update
Posted 7/14/22

Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s (NMUSD) facilities development, planning and design team continue to make progress on major projects throughout our schools. Large construction projects, including many of the ones listed below, must get budget and design approvals from the NMUSD Board of Education and the Division of State Architect (DSA).

See below for a few of the projects currently in the planning, design or construction phase:

NEWPORT HARBOR HIGH SCHOOL HOME ARTS COURTYARD
Construction started in July 2022 and is anticipated to be completed by late 2022.

NHHS home arts

The effort to modernize the existing courtyard in the home arts building at Newport Harbor High School includes improvements in accessibility (such as restroom modifications), hardscape, drainage, landscaping, kiln replacement and equipment, as well as a new kiln roof canopy.

This project also replaces the ceramics program's aging kilns with three new kilns, allowing more ceramic projects to be completed in a shorter period of time.

NEWPORT HARBOR HIGH SCHOOL AQUATIC UPGRADE
Construction is anticipated to begin summer 2023.

NHHS aquatice

This project was originally intended to be completed in two phases, however to minimize downtime of the pool, which is used by students and community, it is now being redesigned to allow for a one-time closure of the pool with all upgrades included in one construction phase.

The original phase of this project, currently awaiting design and DSA approval, includes a remodel of the aquatics complex, including installation of shade structures, replacement of bleachers, addition of sports lighting and relocation of the scoreboard. The additional phase is in the preliminary scoping stage and may include pool plaster and deck repairs, remodel of locker rooms, restrooms, showers and coaches’ offices.

District staff will continue to work with school administration and the City of Newport Beach to relocate aquatic activities during construction, as the pool will not be available during construction. All efforts will be made to minimize pool closure timing and impact to aquatics programs.

ENSIGN INTERMEDIATE STUDENT GATHERING AREA
Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2023.

Ensign student gathering

An outdoor student gathering area is currently being planned for Ensign Intermediate School. The approved conceptual design includes landscaping surrounded by brick and concrete seating walls in the center of the campus, allowing students a new option for gathering for lunch, nutrition breaks or socializing.

ESTANCIA HIGH SCHOOL THEATER
Re-design and DSA approval expected in spring 2023.

Estancia theater site 3

Development continues on a new theater for Estancia High School, which is expected to include a 350-seat theater, black box, lobby and support spaces.

At their July 12, 2022, meeting, the NMUSD Board of Education took action to approve “Site 3” as the new location for this project. Layout and design details will be determined as we progress in the re-design phase of this project.

CORONA DEL MAR MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL FIELD IMPROVEMENTS

Access and functionality improvements to the field area at Corona del Mar Middle and High School are currently being considered. As the scope of the project is defined, the facilities department will coordinate with the school and community members. Additional information and updates will be available on the Facility Project Webpage as the project advances.

CORONA DEL MAR HIGH SCHOOL & ENSIGN INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL RIGHT-OF-WAY IMPROVEMENTS

This project includes expanded sidewalk and landscaping improvements between each school’s perimeter fencing and adjacent streets. The design is complete and a budget was approved, however construction bids received in the spring of 2022 were rejected. The district is reevaluating how to proceed with this project.

Visit the Facility Project Webpage for additional project information and updates.
